Somplàce

The name “Somplàce” originates with reference to the layout of the of the village of Ovedasso (Friulan Ovedasj), which extends from west to east. Entering from the west (and thus coming from Moggio), near the bridge that crosses the stream "Riù di Plàce," you come to a small square called "Da Riù di Plàce". If you keep going, you will find two slopes; on top of the second slope, you can appreciate a cluster of houses (nine houses to be exact), which is called Somplàce. The name is the contracted form of the Friulian expression “Somp la Plàce” (probably formed via a process of aplogy), which literally means “on top of the square”. The settlement was completely rebuilt after the deadly earthquake that hit the Friuli region in 1976.

- The toponym is mentioned in the book "Moggio e le sue Valli," 1980 edition, on pages 317- 319
- From photographic documentation, the village appears to be one of the earliest residential settlements. In fact, in the Napoleonic Cadastre sr_1843_N1947_003, the building identified with plot number 816 had a cross followed by the date 1211 on the stone lintel of the entrance, discovered during renovation work in the early 1970s. Other historical evidence attributed the municipal headquarters of the village to plots numbers 808 and 809 from the Napoleonic Cadastre. These premises were accessible through a stone-arched gate leading to a large ground-floor atrium with two adjacent rooms, one of which had a wood oven. An internal staircase led to two more rooms on the first floor, then another flight of stairs reached two more adjacent rooms on the second floor. As conceived, the structure was undoubtedly intended for public use. The elderly referred to these premises as “Mariòns”. More recently, the headquarters of the municipality of Ovedasso were located at plot number 737 of the Napoleonic Cadastre. To commemorate the origin of the toponym, some volunteers from Somplàce currently decorate a the most characteristic corners of the village with floral arrangements and other items that evoke the four seasons of the year. In front of it, you will see one of the three public fountains located along the village.
